Keep It Shut: What to Say, How to Say It, When to Say It by Karen Ehman

The title says it all for this book! The author focuses on the power of our words and how we should use our words as children of God. She discusses how we should approach gossip, arguments, unnecessary chatter, etc. by giving practical suggestions, specific situations and lots of personal stories.

  1. Pray More Than You Talk

One of the most memorable passages of this book for me was when the author states – Think of someone who is a prayer warrior – How often do you see them engaging in unnecessary talk? This really hit home with me! If I pray about my frustrations, I won’t feel the need to share it everyone who asks me “How’s my day” or “What’s going on”.

2.When in doubt, keep it shut

Do I need to say more? If you are not sure if it’s a good time to speak, or if what you will say will be received well, pause and and keep it shut. There are so many times when I want to respond to a smart comment, or just say something in jest but honestly, I  now try to think before I speak and if my better judgement tells me that I need to keep it shut, I do just that!

 3. I don’t have to respond to everything – This is a tough one, but I realized that sometimes even in arguments and heated conversations, I do not have to respond to every comment that is made. I have to power to control my tongue.
