Driving On Empty (Part 2)

January 21, 2015

Sometimes we are like the Energizer bunny; we keep going, and going and going. And sometimes, we fail to realize that we are running out of fuel. In the last post, we discussed the importance of assessing our spiritual tanks to see where we are on fuel. Today, we discuss the steps to take in order to refuel ourselves when we discover that we are on “E.”

John 7:38 promises that “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” As believers, we should have rivers of living water flowing in us. Rivers give life to all that they come into contact with and we should be able to offer something of substance to those that we encounter. But the water that makes up rivers must come from somewhere and for us, our source is God. We cannot give what we do not acquire from the Source and if we are not being filled by the Source, we dry up.  When we realize that we are traveling on an empty tank, we can take the following steps to refuel:

1. Be honest with yourself and God. We have the tendency to skirt around the real issue. When my car ran out of gas, I could have denied it and called AAA to perform a battery recharge. That would not have solved the problem. Instead, it would only prolong the time it would take for me to get to my destination. Be honest about where you are and talk to God about it.

2. Get Back to the Basics.

  • The Word of God has a way of reminding us of who God is and who He has created us to be.  We cannot be refueled without the Word of God penetrating and changing the inner workings of our minds and heart.
  • Prayer – Simply put, we need to communicate with God more often in the refueling process. No special requirements are needed to do this, only a heart that’s willing to be poured out.
  • Praise – Praise reminds us that God is in control, that He is with us, and that we need Him more than anything.

3. Refuel and Recharge often. If you go a few days, or weeks and realize that you haven’t been properly refueled, don’t beat yourself up. Start back at step 1 and repeat. Thankfully, there is grace when we get sidetracked on our journey.

I’ve been driving myself on empty for too long Lord. I need You to refuel and  regenerate me, as You pour Your living water into me.
