Hebrews 11:8 “By faith, Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.”
Most of us trust that when we enter an address into our GPS, it will take us to our desired location. We trust that the information is updated, relevant, and accurate. If you are like me, you probably take a second and glance at the trip overview to see the suggested route before driving off to your destination.
Our approach to God is often the same. We want to be able to see and approve the route that God is taking us, but God only tells us the end results. He tells us that all things will work out for our good (Romans 8:28) and that He has great plans of prosperity for us, not plans to harm us (Jeremiah 29:11) but He does not give us the step by step plan to get us there. As much as it would make us more comfortable, we cannot wait to know all the details before we move.
In Genesis 12:1-3, we read the story of Abraham and see how he took a leap of faith. In order for us to get to the promises that God has for us, we too will have to take leaps of faith.
We can learn a few faith lessons from Abraham.
1. He obeyed God without knowing the details.
All God told him was to go where he would show him. That’s it. Abraham could have given God some excuses including the fact that he was too old (75 years old) for God to send him anywhere or that his wife was also too old to take the journey.
It’s easy to trust God when we have some ideas about how things will work out but will you take a leap of faith and trust Him with something that is beyond you?
2. There was the promise of blessings associated with Abraham’s obedience.
Gen. 12:2 – “I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great.” Our faith is connected to our obedience. If Abraham had not obeyed God’s instructions to move, he would not have demonstrated his faith.
What can you trust God with today? Where is God requiring you to take a leap of faith without knowing all the details?
Father, I want to take leaps of faith – to trust you blindly and to know, without a doubt, that you are holding my hand as I jump.
